Not for a lack of desire, but rather for a lack any strong feelings towards this book, neither good or bad.

While I enjoyed the connection of two story lines, I wasn't really moved to feel a certain way about the book. The writing was not bad, but I certainly was not drawn in to the book.

I honestly wish I had more to say, but, sadly, I don't. The book wasn't good nor was it bad. It just was.Billy Gonyouhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09708991631086893895noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5009827219800332468.post-8421371238266253182014-10-06T18:38:00.001-07:002014-10-06T18:38:58.413-07:00Book Review: "J"

I want to preface by stating that I am not a huge fan of spoilers. I strongly dislike reading reviews that include them, and do my best to not include them in my own. Because of this, I feel as though my own review about this novel is going to be incredibly vague.

I do not think there is any doubt the author wants to make his readers uncomfortable. It was clear from the start that I was meant to feel unsettled and awkward. I wanted out. I did not want to live in this dystopian world, nor did I want to witness it from afar.

The storyteller, however, had different plans for me.

Not ot only was I uncomfortable, I was attracted to these negative feelings! I was drawn into this novel just as much as I wanted out of it!

I know this review does not offer much in terms of context, but after getting over my initial shock of being pulled in two directions, I need to reread the novel.

This is book is absolutely not for everybody, but if you are attracted to the unattractive, I strongly recommend you pick yourself up a copy.
My feelings for this book after its completion were incredibly torn. One on hand, it was a great survival story about a topic that has been most utilized for frightening space monsters. On the other hand, I found the book to be a bit too scientific/technical for my liking (I do not always want to have to use critical and analytical thinking skills when I read; this book forced me to!).

I chose to read this book because I am attracted to survival stories. How awesome it would be to delve into one about a lone astronaut on Mars! I very much enjoyed the premise of this "Lone Ranger" abandoned by his piers on a foreign planet. It was interesting to see how one would adapt and survive in a situation that should lead to inevitable death. For this part of the story, I was able to remain hooked.

However, what caused my mind to wonder as I read was the overwhelming presence of technical language and lack of satisfying character development. This did not take away from my interest in the survival story, but it did make it very difficult for me to relate to the character in anyway.

While I cannot rate this book five stars, I can recommend it by prefacing that readers will not be able to relate to this kind of survival story.
Despite the fact that the title of this book may lead one to believe there isn't a whole lot of substance and detail to be found, this book is surprisingly comprehensive. It absolutely serves as a great way for somebody who is interested in comic making to begin their artistic adventures!

I only recently became interested in sequential drawing and story telling, and I am finding this book to be incredibly helpful in finding my footing. From perspective planning to inking to software application, John Paul Lowe offers readers a fantastic understanding of the wide variety of important areas that help to build a comic book. I don't expect to become famous for my work, but this book will allow me to take this new hobby that much more seriously.

I highly recommend this book to anybody interested in making comics.

I will be passing this book along to a buddy of mine who is just starting out as a comic book illustrator!

Don't get me wrong, it wasn't a bad book nor was it a bad story line; it just didn't live up to my expectations. The writing style left much to be desired, even though the author did an excellent job capturing the new Doctor's quirks and mannerisms.

I really wish I could give a more in depth review but this book simply fell short. I might read it again to give it a second chance, but it has made me weary of the other books in this series.
I constantly find myself surfing the channels only to check our SyFy's next blockbuster flop. When I came across Andrew Shaffer's How to Survive a Sharknado and Other Unnatural Disasters, I assumed I would be reading a definitive survival guide to all of the crazies monsters and apocalyptic events this television station broadcasts. Well, you know what they say about assuming...

I have much difficult calling this book a book. If anything, it's nothing more than a list of SyFy's most well known movies, with some brief descriptions and humor that only the author could have found funny. Most science fiction type survival books I have read have been able to successfully combine outlandish scenarios with real life survival tips. Shaffer not only failed to combine these two very different things, he did a poor job just focusing on discussing each monster and cataclysmic storm. Frankly, being told to kick Mothman in his moth balls was just not all that entertaining.

When I read these types of book, I am not looking to be simply entertained; I am looking to have an intelligent conversation about not so intelligent topics. Give me a real reason to fear a cave bear. Give me a real reason to want to prepare myself to tackle a Mongolian earthworm. I would have even simply settled for a few good jokes here and there.

I was not given any of these things.

I was given a glorified TV Guide of SyFy's movies.

Do I recommend this book?

No, not at all.

I want to go on record by saying that I've been a Whovian for a little over a year now. During this time, I have developed a deep love and respect for many of the Doctors. I've been exploring the Whovian universe for awhile, and am happy to say that I have finally stumbled across the literary world of Doctor Who.

One of the best things about Silhouette is that you don't need to have read any of the previous books in order to enjoy this one. Sure, having a background of the characters is helpful, but the story is so quick paced and intelligent that you needn't have ever picked up a Doctor Who book before.

From start to finish, I could not put this book down. Only just having been introduced to a new Doctor, this book did an incredible job of drawing in its readers to the individual idiosyncrasies and quirks of this new reincarnation. I no longer felt I was accompanying Matt Smith on his adventures, but rather becoming a new companion to Peter Capaldi. I did have my doubts about this new hero, but Silhouette definitely helped to persuade my opinions in a positive direction.

I was startled by how well the character of Silhouette was developed, and how perfect her "talents" were described. Our author did an incredible job creating a vivid image of her shadow friends and origami birds.

I will, however, comment that our dear friends Clara and Jenny were portrayed a bit flat for my taste. Although they have been with us for some time now, a new reader would feel a bit disappointed by the lack of personality displayed by these two women.

Silhouette is not perfect. It's flat characters do detract from the flow of the storyline. The plot holes all but glare out to the reader. Any true fan of the Doctor Who universe will be able to accept it as is, and fall quickly in tune with the fast paced action of this story. I would absolutely recommend Silhouette to anybody who considers themselves a fan of Doctor Who. To somebody just starting, I would steer them in a different direction. They will not be able to appreciate the true beauty of this story should this be their first.

Overall, I would give this book four of five stars!

I received this book in exchange for an honest review through the Blogging for Books program.
Despite much of the controversy that seems to follow this man in the media, I wanted to create my own opinions based on what I felt to be unbiased sources. This book is definitely biased as it favors the Pope , but I did find it to be an incredibly insightful read.

I tried to first read this book by approaching it head on, but quickly realized the writing style did not allow for an easy nor a simple flow. I decided to spammy reading out for a few months, allowing for a much better reading experience. I'm not sure this book was meant to be read all at once, but rather a series of messages and thoughts directed at engaging the reader on smaller levels.

While I do recommend reading this book, I would have preferred a more engaging story of this new leader of the spiritual world.
Before reading, please note that I received Timothy Lewis' "Forever Friday" as an advanced copy and is not available for purchase until September 17, 2013.

I found this book to be a very easy read filled with messages of everlasting love and hope. I immediately fell in love with the story of Gabe and Huck's relationship, from beginning to end. However, I found the Narrator to be a character that this book should have done without.

I couldn't appreciate the narrator with his decision to take the postcards away from the family of Gabe and Huck to use for his own personal quest. I felt that this character was spying on a love story that he was never meant to see, and the conversations with the couple's house keeper felt forced and unnatural. The story would have been much more appreciated had the narrator been a member of the family, or even the house keeper herself. The chosen narrator was a huge distraction to the story.

That being said, I did very much enjoy reading the love between Gabe and Huck. It's a love I have grown to become jealous of, and hope for something like that of my own one day. My only actual complaint was that there weren't more pieces of their life shared with the reader.

Overall, I did enjoy the book, and I think it is safe to say it has earned a spot in my personal library.

I received this book through the Blogging for Books program in exchange for a complete and honest review.
"The Fourth Fisherman" was so much more than a well written book with a captivating story, it was successfully told story of a man on his quest to find God. In the past, I've read a number of stories that have dealt with this important subject, and I found this one to be more unique than any others I've come across. However, I am not entirely praising this story, as I was disappointed with the way in which the author presented himself.

I get it, finding God is something that is incredibly personal, and something that has the potential to be incredibly rewarding and fulfilling. My problem with this area lies in the fact that the author had this whole "Better than everybody" attitude that I didn't appreciate. I enjoyed reading about his quest, but when he boasted about having a great life, and then comparing himself to poor fishermen, I was left with a poor tasting feeling in my mouth. It didn't really seem that the author truly understood the purpose of finding God.

Regardless of my feelings for the author and his attitude, this is a book I found to be worth the read. I was able to understand myself more, and how to become closer with God. I may not agree with how the author compared himself to situations he clearly didn't understand. It made me appreciate what I have more, and helped me to understand how to help my own personal quest.

It's worth the read, just don't expect to feel close to the author.
However, my anticipation was not met with the excitement I had built up for it. It wasn't bad, and I'm not complaining about the story or trying to discourage potential readers from engaging with it. My problem really revolved around the fact that the book seemed to be incredibly slow in the beginning. I'm an avid reader, and when books start off slow, I tend to lose hope in them very quickly. I am glad, however, I stuck with this book as it did grow on me as time went on and the page numbers grew higher and higher. While I would not recommend reading this book without reading the first in the series, I would recommend this to those looking for an adventure in an ancient land.
I was a little weary when I chose this book as its description didn't seem like something I would care for. More specifically, the story of childhood friends breaking a relationship as they part their separate ways just doesn't do it for me. Although I can relate to this topic, it's not something I enjoy reading about.

I expected a writing style similar to that of an immature teenage girl complaining of her love life woes. While the writing did come off as flowery, it was calming and easy to read. I felt as though Gunn was welcoming her readings into a story, rather than just telling them one. I did appreciate that the religious tone in this book was not preachy and did not make me feel uncomfortable.

I don't feel that I can offer an unbiased review of the story itself as it's not one of my favorite genres, but the writing style was more than enjoyable.
Rather than insight into the Navy SEAL mindset, this book follows Navy SEAL Team SIX Operator Adam Brown from childhood to his heroic, but early, death.

I was amazed at how deep the author was able to look into the life of Adam Brown. It was great to see somebody come from rock bottom to an admirable Navy SEAL. I know there are a number of people who feel that Adam Brown's past should have kept him out of the SEALs, but I am honored that this country was protected by such a great man. Despite being in a war zone, Adam Brown still found time to care for the innocent children - I don't think many people would be able to accomplish such a feat.

I feel it necessary to add that even though much of Brown's spiritual journey was discussed, it was in no way preachy. I would have lost respect for the story if the goal was to convert readers, rather than share the life story of an amazing man.

Although I did absolutely love and admire this book, it was difficult at times to follow. The author's writing style did not flow as well as it could. At times, it was very confusing as to who Blehm was talking about as he did often discuss another person other than Adam Brown. A closer edit would make this book flow so much more nicely.

That being said, I offer my deepest condolences for the family of Adam Brown.

It would have been an honor to have met him.
I immediately fell in love with the way in which this novel was written; it feel trustworthy.

Through no fault of the author, this novel's story was not the best fit for me. Although I was able to graciously appreciate the authenticity of the novel, I couldn't get into what felt to me like a religious cult with a leader I probably would not have respected. At the same time, I understand this book isn't set in 2013, but rather a time in which groups like these were more accepted.

Despite the fact that this novel wasn't one I would normally read, I did think it was well written and very well researched by the author. I wouldn't recommend this book to my friends as we share a similar taste in literature, but I would say that for some people, this is definitely worth a read.
I found James Robison's "God of all Creation" to be incredibly disappointing. What should have been a beautiful read about the power of God's creations strengthening relationships between humankind and God turned into a clear display of inferiority towards anything not human. The author made note several times that humans are superior to the rest of God's creation, causing me to believe the author never truly understood the messages God was instilling in him through different animals.

I believe animals are closer to God than we can ever hope to be, and that adopting their way of living can assist in creating a new and more improved relationship with the Lord. I find myself challenging the integrity of the author's messages as he clearly missed them himself. We are not above the rest of God's creations. In fact, we might very well be the inferior ones.

The book itself was misleading. A self-proclaimed messaged of God's love through pets was more of a focus of forced biblical passages. I found most of the stories of the animals to be incredibly weak, and some even manipulated to make a suspicious comment. I do not think I can recommend this book to anybody. If you want to learn about God's love through animals, spend some time with them. Play with a puppy. Hang out with a cat. Ride a horse. You'll get so much more out of those experiences than you will by reading this book.
Lowell offered readers a great concept regarding the devolution of civilization by means of a deadly plague and the trials that follow; his execution, however, was flawed.

Lowell weaves a great tale of a group of plague survivors and the problems they face in their attempts at rebuilding some form of civilization. It was interesting to see how the different survivors reacted to their new and changing surroundings. There were a significant number of post apocalyptic obstacles/situations discussed, and Lowell offered great insight into how real people might react to them. I find that most books focusing on the end of the world forget to investigate the human mind; Lowell took a great risk and explored this frontier to much success. However, his execution could have been much more engaging.

For most of this book, I felt that I had no idea who any of the characters were. There seemed to be no development whatsoever, and even the narrator felt like a stranger to me even though I was listing to his story for a significant amount of time. I did not feel as though I were in this world watching the events unfold, but rather overhearing bits and pieces of information from a stranger on a city bus. I had troubling sympathizing with the characters, and when they faced death and destruction, I could not be moved.

Lowell's look into the human mind following the destruction of over 98% of the world's population would have been much more enjoyable and effective had some scenes been lengthened, and others cut. I would have loved to been part of this world, but I did not find Lowell to be engaging enough.

That being said, I would give this book 3 of 5 stars. As I mentioned earlier, the story was great, but there remains much room for improvement when it comes to Lowell's writing style.
Mike Glenn's "The Gospel of Yes" is a poor and manipulated look at the Gospel.

Mike Glenn turned me away from his book at the beginning when he talks about an affair that happened within his Church, and his clear inability to trust God's handling of the situation. For an affair that had nothing to do with his family life, Glenn draws himself as the center of attention. I felt he was looking for sympathy in a situation where he was not even a key player, if a player at all. I was also turned off by his need to discuss business that was not his own, and act as though he was hurt the most from it. I know there are others who will not agree with this, but I am standing by my opinion here.

If the talk of the affair was not enough to turn me off, the tantrum he mounted to get God's attention was absolutely ridiculous. For me, this absolutely destroyed Glenn's integrity as a representative speaker of the Gospels. In addition, the constant use of the words 'yes' and 'no' made me feel as though Glenn was trying to train a dog. I did not appreciate this approach, and there is absolutely no way I would recommend this book to anyone.

If you find yourself looking for answers, read the actual Gospels; they are much more fulfilling than this sad attempt at religious and spiritual intervention.

Rubart's "Soul's Gate," I feel it important to tell you there is absolutely no way I can produce a review worthy of what I believe is an incredibly beautiful and moving novel. I am very critical about the works of literature I add to my personal library, but I knew upon immediately starting this novel that it would have a permanent place on one of my shelves.

The basic idea of this novel is that, with God's help, humans have the ability to travel into the souls of other people and wage war against any demons that may be keeping home there. Just the idea of battling for somebody else's soul really struck a chord with me, as I truly believe we have the power to change the life of another person if we can connect to his or her soul. The execution of this idea is accomplished with the help of Biblical passages and successful character development.

I do want to give anything away, but as the four characters grew stronger as the novel progressed, I could not stop myself from getting chills. Rubart offers his readers a once-in-a-lifetime look at how the soul works, and how God can allow you to be set free. Although this work is a piece of fiction, it gave me incredible hope and strength to battle my own demons. It was incredible watching the characters wage war for one another.

Putting the book down for a break was not an option for me. Every time I walked away from the book, I could not wait to pick it up again.

Even better, the cover of this novel indicates that there might be a sequel!

I would absolutely recommend this book to all of my family and friends. Although there is an incredibly strong religious tone to this novel, it has the ability and power to help anybody in need of freedom and salvation. I do not look at this book as a piece of religious literature, but rather a way to enrich one's life while basking in the love of God.

Please, please read this book if you get the chance. I cannot see any reason why somebody would regret that decision. Even if you are turned off by religious talk, you will definitely become inspired to fight and defeat the demons keeping you from living that perfect life.

This is definitely one of the best books I have ever read.

I do not think it is possible to explain just how much I
enjoyed reading Nick Vujicic’s “Unstoppable.” To call this a book is absolutely
an understatement. “Unstoppable” is a powerful message filled with
unconditional love, not only for our Lord, but for all of His creations.

Before accepting this message (I use accepting rather here than
the word ‘reading’ because this experience was much more than that), I did not
know much at all about the author, Nick Vujicic. I knew a man without limbs
existed in this world, but until now, I never had the opportunity to hear his
story.

As Vujicic tells his tale, I was in complete shock that he
could be so happy and fulfilled without arms and legs. His love for God is
unchallengeable, and his desire to spread that love throughout the globe is
incredibly inspirational. He really gave me a lot to think about as far as my
life is concerned.

I know this review is not doing any justice to “Unstoppable,”
but I cannot praise it enough. Even if somebody were not interested in hearing
Vujicic speak about God, they can still take a lot from his life filled with
courage, hope, and strength. I cannot honestly say that I could remain positive
if I had been born without limbs. I would feel lost, neglected, and even
worthless. Vujicic, however, is able to overcome all of this negative emotions
and create a life for himself this is absolutely stunning and beautiful.

Way to go, Nick!

If I had any criticisms with “Unstoppable,” it would be that
this book contains a number of stories from different people suffering from a
number of different ailments or situations. I felt that these stories, although
inspiring, took away from Vujicic’s own message; there were too many for my personal
taste. However, this would not stop me from recommending “Unstoppable” to
friends and family.

I have created a rule for myself when it comes to
literature; if the author is able to weave such a tale that I am unable to
figure out the ending for most of the novel, I am a very happy reader. I enjoy
being kept in suspense, and I do not take spoilers lightly. Even if the writing
is absolutely horrible, I will still enjoy what I am reading if I cannot figure
out the direction in which the story is heading.

out the entire ‘twist’ to Shelley M. Hollenbeck’s “The Queensford Family”
around page 26, long before any surprise ending was even hinted at. If it weren't for the fact that I agreed to read and review this book, I would have put it
down and moved on with something else immediately.

With characters that have no substance whatsoever,
Hollenbeck promises a story that may even rival those of Agatha Christie. However,
Hollenbeck falls incredibly short of fulfilling her promise as she delivers a
sad and failed attempt at creating what I am sure she hoped would be the ‘next
big thing.’ Right from the start I began to question the integrity of this
story as it was so reminiscent of every other ‘murder at a fancy house’ story line where a number of selected people are invited to gather and then all
mysteriously die. Hollenbeck’s style of writing was enjoyable to read, but the
actual story was incredibly difficult to get through.

Littered with grammatical errors, I was left questioning
whether or not this book was actually edited before print. The characters have
no substance, the dialogue is forced, and the flow is terrible. We move from
scene to scene with no transition; I had to reread many parts of this book to
even figure out where I was as far as the book’s setting is concerned.

It is my recommendation that Hollenbeck look at her ‘final’
manuscript and completely overhaul it. It does have potential to be an
excellent read, but its current execution is less than poor. As is, I cannot
recommend this book to any of my family or friends; their time would be better
spent with another book. I would say, however, that if the book were to be rewritten,
I WOULD read it again. It was not completely terrible. If anything, it is
grossly unfinished.

It pains me to write this review.

This book promised to deliver to me an experience that I

We follow Gabriel, who after witnessing a tragic
event, tries to live a normal life without falling victim to his past. But that’s
about as deep as it goes. Character development, if you can even call it that,
is incredibly minimal. We do not learn to love any person in this book, nor do
we even feel for his situation. Characters, such as a school
teacher and old friend, come and go without any notice. I failed to even see
their significance after awhile. The attempts at symbolism were weak, and the plot twists became more than predictable after awhile.

left much to be desired. If you are looking for something to kill time with,

only give this book 1.5 out of 5 stars.

In order successfully
review “Where There is Love, There is God,” I find it important to offer two
separate reviews; one on the quality of the book’s message, and the other on
the way in which the book was created (layout, writing, etc.).

offers in this book are both vital and beautiful. Her love for Jesus becomes apparent
from the moment you begin reading her journey, and continues to grow with every
turn of the page. She brings in anecdotes from her life’s work which does
wonders to validate her beliefs. As I was reading this book, a comfortable
peace fell over me. Her messages of love, both of God and of your neighbor,
struck such a chord within me that I did not want this book to reach its end.

There are a number of passages
I know that I will continue to look back to in the future, and I believe that
this is one of the most successful features of the book – it can’t be read just
once. I can see myself referring back to certain messages in this book for the
rest of my life. For the quality of the messages in this book, I HIGHLY suggest
finding yourself a copy and diving into it as quickly as you can.

My only grievances with
this book surround only the book’s production. I found much of this book to be
completely repetitive. I understand wanting to get a message across, but there
is a fine line between giving foundation to your beliefs and overstating them;
this book crossed that line too many times for my taste. This book could have
been cut in half and readers still would have been able to feel the full power
and beauty of Mother Teresa’s messages. Despite this, the messages in this book were
phenomenal and I recommend this book to you from my heart. I give this book 4.5
of 5 stars.

It never occurred to me how short Christ's ministry was, and I believed that it was be an in-depth look at those thousand days. However, after reading Jonathan Falwell's "1,000 Days: Ministry of Christ," I was left with much to be desired. I had hoped for a feeling of closeness with our Savior, but I felt that I may have enjoyed such an experience elsewhere. The book wasn't bad at all, it just didn't fulfill my needs and desires. I would recommend this book to people, however, it would probably be grouped with a number of other books surrounding the same or similar topic. Don't disregard the book because of my "not-the-best" review, but just pay attention to the fact that if you are looking to feel closer with Christ through literature, there are probably better outlets.
Michael John Cusick’s “Surfing For God: Discovering the Divine Desire Beneath Sexual Struggle” was definitely an interesting read, and not at all what I expected when I was looking for a book to read. Although the writing was very easy to read, and had an impeccable flow, I felt the combination of topics in the book to be lacking, and somewhat offensive. I was taken aback by the amount of times that Cusick referred to men who divulge in pornography to be “broken.” Yes, everybody is invited to his or her own opinion, but to refer to somebody as broken because of their interests (for lack of a better word) is a little judgmental. I was not looking for an inspirational read, but many of the messages in the book pushed me away from Cusick’s opinions. I do consider myself to be a spiritual person, but maybe I’m just not on the same wavelength as Cusick. The target audience was somewhat small, as well. As a man, I was offended by what felt like an attack on men, rather than on pornography itself.
S. Lewis. Terry Lindvall's "Surprised by Laughter: The Comic World of C. S. Lewis" read more like a college textbook than something that should have been a cozy read. As somebody with a degree in English, I'm over the whole need to analyze somebody's life in a textbook fashion. While this book may prove ideal for a classroom setting, I couldn't help but regret my decision to read this book. I'm sure some of you reading this may find it enjoyable, but if you're looking for a relaxing book, I suggest looking elsewhere.
